The creation of a transportable and modular architectural object is the main aspect of the bauhaus lab marseille project. The aim is to rearrange a space following a reinterpretation of the principles of the Bauhaus: the use of simple geometric forms, the predominance of functionality, the use of industrial materials, transparency, and primary colors. The participants will propose a reinterpretation of these precepts.
This polymorphic place will host multimedia artist workshops, lectures about interdisciplinarity, multimedia workshops for children, and an exhibition.
The physical constraints of the project
The challenge is to create a transportable structure because it will move to various European cities, and will have to adjust according to different uses and locations. Aspects concerning the public (circulation, seating for around 50 people), the management of lighting and access to facilities must be taken into account.
Maximum duration of the construction site: 15 days
The construction period of the winning project is scheduled for the second half of July 2009.
Primary home site: salle Maintenant
The Friche La Belle de Mai provides the "Maintenant" space. This location was designed as a non-closed space, open to traffic, dealing with ephemeral events. The maximum area devoted to the project is 400 m2; its main feature is a frame of 7 meters beams. The proposed project will take into account this structural characteristic without considering it as an immutable or decisive aspect, because it will be rebuilt on other sites.
Actors
During the period of residence (3 weeks), ten artists from various fields - video, performance, sound, photography- will work within the structure. Lectures open to the public as well as multimedia workshops for children will also take place during those 3 weeks. During the exhibition period (2 weeks), the structure will host the works created by artists.
Budget
The project budget is 40,000 euros, of which 10,000 euros is provided as an optional resource. Applicants will have to propose a detailed management of this budget through a DPGF (decomposition of the overall price), which clearly distinguishes these two amounts.
Jury
The Jury members are the architects Matthieu Poitevin and Rémy Marciano, professors at the National Architecture School of Marseille (ENSA), Thierry Ollat, director of the Contemporary Art Museum of Marseille (MAC), Patrick Bardou from Editions Parentheses, and a member of Mécènes du Sud.
Prize-Winners
The seven best projects selected by the jury will form part of an exhibition in Weimar, Germany and in Marseilles in 2009. Inclusion in a publication diffused around Europe is also planned. The winning project will be built and displayed during the bauhaus lab marseille event, in parallel with the contemporary art fair Art-o-Rama, at the Friche de La Belle de Mai in Marseilles. At the end of the Marseilles event, the prize-winning structure will travel to Weimar to become an ephemeral cultural centre, then on to other European cities. The progress of the work from conception to construction will be documented online via an innovative platform: bauhaus.tv hosted by ikono.tv.
Applications
The contest is open to Euro-Mediterranean artists, architects, designers, and stage designers. The criteria for technical feasibility and insurance are essential to the project. We strongly encourage interdisciplinary collaborations.
